If you want to spend every night writing and forget about ever working on any other classes then you should take his class.
Explains expectations multiple times
Generous office hours
Assigns texts that are free or at least cheap
Cons: Can be confusing/frustrating at first
Dr. Horton (aka Dr. H) doesn't come across as the friendliest guy at first. I hear the word "arrogant" used about him a lot. He doesn't laugh. But that's just his personality, and once you get used to that, wow. He really cares about his students and their success.
Also, he really takes into consideration students' budgets when choosing texts for his classes. They're often freely available online or at least dirt-cheap when bought used online. This financial consideration on Dr. H's part is extremely appreciated, especially when I'm paying $200+ for textbooks in other classes.
Yes, he expects a lot from his students, but he also goes above and beyond to help when someone shows any effort at all. His classes will push you outside your comfort zone and really challenge you. Sometimes I've really hated books that he's assigned, and I've gone to his office to tell him that--one time I even flat out told him I hated his favorite book. He's never upset when I disagree with his views though and we've had some great conversations.
I felt like his 1102 class was an awful lot of work, especially since I took it over a summer. I didn't think I'd ever take another English class again after that. But guess what? It really prepared me for other classes in college. I went back for two more of Dr. H's classes just because I love his teaching style now, and I especially love the discussions he leads in classes.
Do NOT take his class if you want an easy A. You won't get it from him. Ever. But if you want to be challenged, if you want to learn how to read and write at a college level, and if you're ready to put in the effort, sign up for a class with Dr. H.
Cons: EVERYTHING
RUDE, ARROGANT ASSHOLE
He thinks he is teaching an upper english class at harvard university... come on dude. He is the worst professor. Seriously, BEWARE! All of my other professors talk shit on him.. I am currently doing a research paper, article essay and article and quote responses ALL AT ONCE, and different parts are due on each day.. it FUCKING SUCKS
